Edit Workshop Evaluation

What the edit workshop was, that it was us being taught how to use the new iMovie. The main aim of this project was to demonstrate the understanding of using the 180 degree rule, match-on-action and shot reverse shot. Edit workshop was where we edited out footage adding in these camera shots, also having a little guidance by Chris, the worker from the drama centre to help us, and give us tips.

I used the 180 degree rule throughout my editing exercise, the 180 degree rule was put to test when we where doing the talking shots which included the over the shoulder shot.

The shot used here is an over the shoulder shot, which is used when there is dialogue involved, and that is what it is being used for in this. As you can see Myself (Rianne) is positioned on the left, and Ashley on the right. Once you have arranged the positions you are in you can't break them and move around to the opposite side. Which would mean you breaking the 180 degree rule. By breaking the rule your most likely to confuse the
audience so its best to keep to your original positions. The only away your aloud to defy the rule is so have the camera pan or follow you around to show you have moved otherwise you have no indication that you have moved.

The 180 degree rule is also used in this over the shoulder shot is well  because as you can see I'm still on the left side of the screen and Ashley is still on the right. The 180 degree rule helps to get rid of confusion when people are talking. That is why we use it and had to be very careful when filming making sure to keep it in mind.

This shot was taken from behind because if it was taken from the front we would have broken the 180 degree rule, which is what we had done the first time. The first time we shot this shot we did it from the front which had switched all the positioning and when it came back to editing and watching it over it didn't make any sense. So when we filmed it from the back it kept all the positioning the same.

The rule of thirds is something we used throughout filming, it is something that has to be used in every shot so everything is proportional and doesn't look off balance. The rule of thirds acts as a guild-line when filming.
The rule of thirds helps divide the image into equal parts, helping give people aim where to shoot.

Match on action was used when Zahra was opening the door. Match on action is an editing technique, where there are two shots which connect together at different angles but have the same movement/ action that is taken place. In our work we decided to use match on action when she opens the door because it is something which we have seen a lot of a though its the easiest way to do match on action.

There weren't many problems during production but during post production when you actually came to sat down and take a look at your work you start to identify certain errors. What I found hard was to get all the timing of everything right to make it look fluent and not so cut off form one scene to another. If I were to edit again I would change the timings of some of the scene and where I cut them at certain parts to make sure you see everything and it sounds better.
The overall strengths of our work were firstly creatively we had everything under go. We knew what we had to do and where we had to do it. Our idea's individually all came together to form one big idea, this was useful because all together everything linked in together so you get the benefits from everyone's idea in your work. We really used certain locations of our own school and played them to our advantage, such as we used a hallway in our school which had a very old, harsh effect to it. The walls where all bricked and it made everything look more realistic and it related to the situation the characters where in. We also used a nearby police HQ as one of our locations again making everything look realistic.
Another strength was when it came to editing and digital technology. What we used where iMovie 9, Mac and a camera. I though editing was one of the big strengths of my work was because I could finally come and sit down and piece my work together seeing the final product, iMove had many feature's that helped make my work look even better from transitions to video effects and even sound. The transitions I used in my work where cross dissolve, fade to black/white etc.  These helped add to my work making it look more interesting and also help add to the effect. For example I had a flashback and used an effect to help it look like this was happening. I used certain video effects to help show the mood of a certain scene or frame, for example by dimming one scene and changing the colours to darker colours it helps you get the idea that it is a sad scene oppose to a happy one.
Sound effects I used to enhance certain sounds such as the clock ticking and add emphasis to certain scene's e.g. when Zahra is walking in that music/sound effect helps build up tension and suspense.
The overall weakness's of my work would be the position of some of the frames, for example some of the work would be slightly tilted but that would be because of the tripod, also as I said before the timing of some of the shots and when it came to re-filming certain shots we didn't leave enough talking time the first time round. So overall I would say it would be timing of things would be my weakness.

Overall improvements I would make would be to make my work more shorter, because by doing this I get to the point more quicker instead of having to wait for it. And I would also improve on timings as I have said many times just to make everything more accurate and precise.
