Defynnig British Social Realism

British social realism to me is a genre of film which is only used in Britain, it's a genre where they tackle loads of everyday problems British people face. It focus's more towards the working class/ less fortunate and really gives you a deep insight of what life is like for them. It covers so many aspects if not everything and it really allows you to understand what life it like. Everything shown is very close to the truth nothing is far fetched and this is what makes it unique to me and stand out because it's different from other genre's especially compared to Hollywood.
British social realism has many themes which is based on and is usually aimed towards a more educated audience who likes to think and is not so straight forward. The ages I would say are 15 onward, but depending on the film the target audience may vary. British social realism target many issues such as drug abuse, violence, corrupted family's, crime, poverty, pregnancy, gangs etc. They focus on real life situations and make it their own turning them into films for the public. The main conventions of a British social realism film are that where ever they are filming or the film is set they film local using nearby locations which aren't so appealing to the public and also use un-known actors because firstly they can't afford the mainstream actors but also because it wouldn't fit right having a Hollywood actor/actress play a role which isn't what they are use too.
Some of the most successful British social realism films were Slumdog Millionaire, Kidulthood and Attack The Block.
