There are many things with makes a film successful with an audience, you have to take into consideration many things such as the actors or actresses used or the genre your film is and the way it is promoted to the audience.

Famous actors/ actresses

This is one of the key things in making a film successful. Famous actors/actresses can have a major impact on a film. Films with well known actors usually tend to rake in more money. Especially in the box office. The box office is the amount of money a film makes during it's cinema release. What makes it a successful film with the audience is that if production company's have big name stars in their films it brings a lot of attention to the film. Having attractive actors such as Taylor Lautner, Channing Tatum etc. bring's a lot of attention to your film, they appeal to many young women and female teenagers. They attract that audience to come see their film, because they are well known actors and are known for their success in the past that also encourage people to come see their films. Also they know what type of roles they normally take on and are use to seeing then act a particular role, so the audience just knowing what they are going to watch briefly is also good. It also works the same way with attractive female actresses. 

Genre of film

The genre of a film is an important factor, it's what mainly pulls you in to go watch a film. There are many types of genres such as horror, comedy, romance, chick flicks, action, action-adventure etc. People tend to stick with what they know and what their preference is, for example if your a comedy fan and you go to see a horror film with loads of gory scene's, its not going to be something your going to enjoy. By sticking with something your comfortable with and what you enjoy, then you know it is going to be successful. Also matching the genre with an appropriate actor for example Chris Tucker is Rush Hour was perfect because himself being a comedian fitted the comedy role perfectly and Jackie Chan being a marshal artist suits the action side to the film, and the film turned out to be very successful. Click here to see box office success for Rush Hour!

Promotion and Word of mouth

Having a well promoted film will definitely encourage people to go see your film, if promotion is done properly and the word gets out, you could have a very successful film. Professional marketing helps promotion and also the production company. Personally I feel the more I see a film being advertised and the more it keeps popping up everywhere I go it makes me want to see it because seeing everywhere and being all the hype it makes you curious if your missing out on a good film. But I think promotion only works well if its promoting a certain genre you like because if your promoting a action film and your preference is romance it will annoy you firstly because they are completely different and secondly because it's something your not interested in. So seeing it all the time will make you dislike it even more. But it could also work and make you want to see it because it's in your face all the time and one day you may give up and just want to watch it, and may even like.

Word of mouth is also a really good way to go get your film seen, people rely heavily on others opinions, especially there friends.  When your friends go to see a film and your not with them the first thing you automatically ask them is "is it good?" or "what was it about?" and if its a good film which they enjoyed they will talk well about it and hype it up making it sound really interesting encouraging the other person to go see it, or if they didn't enjoy it they wouldn't talk so well of it and it would dis-encourage you to go see it. In my opinion I take my friends word or opinions on films, so if they say its worth watching. I'm most likely to go watch it because they said it was good.

Production Budget

Production budget is the the amount of money spent on the making of a film, this includes the cast, lighting, special effects, sound etc. Production budget is key to a successful film because the more money you have to spend on a film, the better the film will come out. That is not what accentually happens all the time, because horror films have a very low production budget compared to other films and yet they come out making the most sometimes. Action-Adventure films are normally films with the larger film budget because all their money goes towards special effects, sounds and all mainstream actors in the film.

A Good Storyline

This is one of the more obvious ways in what makes a production company successful. A good storyline can make or break your film.   Originality in a storyline can make a film very successful, for example Avatar is the film which has made the most ever in the box office and had the most original idea which has not ever been done before. Also remakes of original films which have been hits in the past tend to do well in the box office because its an updated version of what people already know.
