Further Analysis

Click here to watch the opening sequence to this film : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HQQtWqOHYs

In this shot we see this in the opening and starts off the whole sequence. It is used to shown what production company is used to make this film. It is graphic shot and is clearly shown to be hand drawn. It looks very plain and not unprofessional giving you a bad impression already when first watching the sequence.

In this shot we see an establishing shot, this shot shows some British Social realism themes but showing that violence has happened and there it now an ambulance there. This also helps give us an understanding of the area it is set in because it shows its obviously a bad place because crime has taken place but not only that as you can see in the background it is an estate area and estates are usually a main location for British social realism films.

In this shot we see a woman getting something stolen from her. I think this shot is good because we see a typical theme from British social realism shown here. Also the framing and location of this shot is set in a supposedly dark area with a brick wall suggesting its a rough area and and empty space where a gang tries to rob a woman.

In this shot they have used a long shot to shown the characters and surroundings. We see a lot of mise-en-scene in this shot from the background estates to the actual characters and costumes they are wearing. They come across to us as gangsters and are dressed up in hoodies and tracksuit bottoms. This helps show how the characters are like and helps to portray them in a certain way to the audience.

This shot is an action shot which introduces the main character who we see a lot throughout the opening sequence. We see him here running from the police. Underneath we have graphics introducing him to the audience.

Here we have another graphic which is just placed in the middle of the screen. This could be improved by changing the font or adding some more animation because right now when watching it, it is very plain and doesn't really capture your attention like the main graphic should.

In this shot we area gain shown another British social realism theme which in this case is dealing and money. This scene shows a close up of what is going to emphasize what it happening and to bring more detail to it.

Here we are shown another location and are shown the characters a bit more the framing of this could be better so we see the characters faces more but again we also see how they would act in this environment for e.g. sitting on the window sill when there are sofa's right in front of you.

And lastly in this scene we see him walking out and talking on the phone after. What is wrong with this scene is that when filming they clearly forgot about timing and lighting because we go from night to day in one scene which is an obvious error and may confuse some viewers.

Written Syria

In this shot we see the production company, we see that this design is computer generated but still is very simple, you could say not much thought has gone into it but then again it could be what they where aiming for, also the color scheme is very boring and doesn't capture your attention.

In this shot we see a guy who is tied up and injured with a spotlight on him, I really like the way this scene it shot because it is very different from what we have seen before. I like the lighting used a blue light shined from underneath gives the right effect for the scene and helps to set up the scene, also the makeup and costume work is done very well because he it not covered in blood but there is enough there to show he is badly injured, it looks quite realistic.

This shot is continued from the previous one but it has graphics in it, I think the graphics works well with this because firstly the effect that comes on is like a type writer and secondly I think the font works well with it. Also its on below the main character who we see throughout.

I like this shot because firstly it is a close up and it shows everything in detail. This shots shows him waking up and waking up with a black eye, following from the previous shots that he was being abused and beaten up, the attention to detail in this shot is very good because the black eye is done very realistically you would actually think he had gotten beaten up.

This shot then shows everything coming back to him and him waking up with a headache. Underneath we have some more graphics in the same font as before, which I think is ok. But I think they could of places is somewhere else or made it bigger because it is very hard to read at time and is a struggle for the audience.

This shot again shows him thinking about what has happened but also helps show the surroundings. It shows the simplicity of the room and conditions this character is living in. As you can see everything is very plain and there is nothing on the walls. Also the bed is simple and a single bed and all this helps to show that he is a poor person.

In this shot we see him looking down at his feet were he has holes in his socks, this is a good shot again to me because I think it shows what he has been through to have holes in his socks. Also it helps link back to previous shots and shows again he is poor and can't afford another pair of socks.

In this shot we see the title, I like the font and I think it fits with the theme but I also think more could be done to improve it. Whether it be add some animation to it or add some color because a lot of black and white is used and a good pop of color can catch your attention.

This shot is a good one because it shows him looking towards the flag (Syria) and tears it down in anger and it makes you wonder why. Also to do with color because everything else is neutral around it the flag colours pop and help bring attention to it.

And finally to end of the scene there is him writing a letter and he starts it off and we don't really know what happens but it makes us want to find out. Also attention to detail is very good in this frame because as you can see in the cupboard the glass is broken and this helps to show what poor conditions he is living in.
