Analyzing Conventions Of An Opening Sequence

This is one of this first shots we see in the opening sequence, we see a silhouette of the main character James Bond. In this shot he is shown to be very dominant and your focus is mainly on him. The colour scheme used here are very dark tones with warmth to them was you can see we have a mainly black background with the center a warm orange/yellow colour with a glow surrounding it. The colours help give a certain theme to the shot and can change the way the character is shown to the audience. Also the silhouette is of him facing the sun making it out as if he looking over the world, just there contemplating. This is also a very masculine shot helping to set up the representation of the character.  This shot helps to establish the genre by dark outlook it has but the small burst of colour and the way everything is framed.

In this shot we see again the main character James Bond with an iconic symbol, which is his gun which we see a lot in nearly every shot of the opening sequence. It establishes again a very masculine, violent representation of him because firstly the way he is holding the gun is in a very comfortable and confident way which shows he knows what he is doing and it's nothing new to him, the violence obviously shown by the gun but I like what they have done here is because they have added animation on the gun bullet and it somewhat travels through the whole opening taking you to different locations. This shot shows institutional information at the bottom keeping it simple but the graphics suitable. I like the way they have set up the page by having an image with a very detailed animation which doesn't take up the whole screen with a plain background which then draws attention to animation taking place and also the graphics because they are both bold.

In this shot this is the main graphic title and we see the title of the movie again with the bullet animation. The audience expectations that this shows is firstly that the film has something to do with violence due to the bullet shooting across the screen. This shot doesn't really have any institutional information because it is just the title part but the positioning of this is to the middle-top so its your main focus. Again this establishes the genre by the bullet showing it could be action/adventure.

In this shot we see again the main character making his way through the desert again with a gun in his hand. This shot establishes the representation of him again being a very masculine man doing very hard thing and surviving in tough conditions and again you don't really see his face it is another silhouette which makes it even more mysterious because you have no idea who it is. This shot communicates institutional information by along the side at the top, as you can see only one name is featured at the top which much show its an important person or key character to be featured by themselves. This again established the genre by the background location and from what we can see the character doing.

In this shot we finally see another female laying down on the sand and the sun behind her showing off her silhouette portraying a very sexual figure to us representing women in a stereotypical way. Representations are established here by the way she is positioned and shown on camera by the way she is sexually portrayed. Also again she is shown to us as barely wearing any clothes. Institutional information is shown along side on the bottom which represents the character being shown. She is one of the main characters and this is why we see her featured by herself. In this shot we are still located in the desert and still have the sun behind us as a background.

In this shot there is a representation of location which is desert and there seems to be a desert theme throughout the whole opening sequence which could suggest that the film is going to be heavily set in the desert. In this shot institutional information is shown, we are shown the director and he is featured by himself because he has a huge part to do with the film but as he is not staring in it there is no character there for him and there is just a animated background.

In this shot the representation's established are that we finally get to see a close up of the main characters face but it is still shaded and still remains mysterious to us. We still see him with the gun keeping the masculine, dangerous theme throughout, we see two version of him one from up close and one from a far. The audience expectations it creates is again a dangerous, violent one which throughout is backed up with the constant sight of a gun through out whether it be the gun itself or the bullet, by seeing the opening the audience is probably expecting lots of guns in the film along with some crime. It also helps establish the genre because guns are related to action adventure plus the way its editing is in a very adventurous feel and you get the impression that it is like that.

In this shot we see loads of females, who are all the same but are just places all around the screen in different positions all around the screen keeping that sun background in the back with loads of silhouettes, giving it a mysterious feel because barely any of the characters faces are shown in this opening sequence. But the way the lady is standing is in a very feminine, sexual way flaunting her assets and portraying herself at a sex symbol which is a stereotype for women. The genre isn't really shown that much in this shot because if you where just to see this shot you wouldn't really get the impression that it is an action-adventure based film based on this shot. Institutional information is show the second unit director is shown and he is again featured by himself because he also plays an important part in making the film.

And the last shot towards the end, ends the opening sequence withe him holding the gun as the final shot. Again the animation continuous on to the end and is all like together by the bullet/gun. The representation given here is that by now we should always know that he has a gun on him at all times and that is his choice of weapon to use.  Institutional information shown here are three of the production company members along the bottom, they may not be as important because they are all placed together. This ending shot sets the mood for the audience an gives them an idea what it about to come after everything they have seen.
